4007 - Technical Summary

4007 - CMOS Dual Complementary Pair Plus Inverter

Overview

The HCC4007UB is a monolithic integrated circuit belonging to the 4000 series CMOS logic family. This device features standardized symmetrical output characteristics and is designed for medium-speed operation. It is available in both 14-lead dual in-line plastic (DIP) and ceramic packages, making it suitable for a wide range of applications in digital logic design.

The 4007 is particularly notable for its dual complementary pairs plus inverter configuration, which provides designers with flexible building blocks for creating custom logic functions. The device meets all requirements of JEDEC Tentative Standard No. 13A, ensuring compatibility with other B-series CMOS devices.

Pin Configuration

The 4007 contains three independent CMOS pairs that can be configured in various ways:

Functional Description

The 4007 contains three independent complementary pairs with separate gate connections, plus an additional inverter. This unique configuration allows for great flexibility in circuit design. The complementary pairs consist of both P-channel and N-channel MOSFETs with common gate connections, enabling the creation of various logic functions including inverters, NOR gates, NAND gates, and more complex combinatorial logic.

The symmetrical output characteristics ensure that the rise and fall times are balanced, which is particularly important for clock distribution and timing applications. The buffered inputs provide improved noise immunity compared to unbuffered CMOS devices.

Design Considerations

Power Supply Decoupling

As with all CMOS devices, proper power supply decoupling is essential. A 0.1µF ceramic capacitor should be placed as close as possible between VDD and VSS pins to minimize noise and ensure stable operation.
